When antibiotics stop working…

Posted on: August 15, 2010

Antibiotics have been used to battle bacterial infections such as strep throat and urinary tract infections for so long that recently these powerful medications have been used so frequently and in the wrong way that it has led to antibiotic resistance (a growth of germs these drugs can’t treat).

It is important to remember that common illnesses like upper respiratory infection (common cold and flu), pharyngitis (sore throat) and acute bronchitis (inflammation of the small tubes in the lungs) are caused by viruses, so antibiotics won’t help you recover.

Rest and plenty of fluids are the best treatment. To reduce your risk of catching and passing on germs, wash your hands frequently, eat healthy, get enough sleep, get some physical exercise daily and avoid stress.
